What is a Tent Trailer?
The tent trailer, which is a type of RV (recreational vehicle), is also sometimes called a pop-up trailer, or a folding trailer. Some also refer to tent trailers as camping trailers, as they are most commonly used for camping trips, rather than for the extended cross-country travel associated with motorized RVs. Whatever they are called, tent trailers are lightweight, towable units with folding or slide-out panels and extensions that provide additional tent-like living space when the unit is parked.
Tent trailers are considered easy to set up and use, and because they are so lightweight, can be towed by mid-sized vehicles, such as the family mini-van. Some very light and compact tent trailers can actually be towed by motorcycles and compact cars. Travel length for a tent trailer is usually around 12 feet.
In addition to being considerably more fuel-efficient than motorized RVs, tent trailers are detachable from the towing vehicle. This means a family can set up camp with the tent trailer, and then use the family vehicle to go sightseeing without having to lug around the RV. Tent trailers are also some of the most inexpensive RVs that can be purchased.
Many tent trailers have canvas walls and closely resemble traditional tents. Other types have solid walls for better protection in cold weather. Tent trailers can range in size when set up from small and simple (suitable for an individual or couple) to quite large and elaborate (suitable for a family).
